WHAT EVENT SPARKED THE WAR AND WHY?

The assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand was the main factor that sparked the war. He decided that he was going to visit Sarajevo, Bosnia. Bosnia was under the rule of Austria- Hungary but it had many Serbs and Slavs living there. When the Serbs heard of the Archduke’s visit they were angry. Many Serbs viewed the Austrians as foreign oppressors. A Serbian terrorist, member of the Black Hand, took matters into his own hands. Although there were many warnings sent to the Archduke about what could happen to him if he followed through with his visit to Bosnia, he ignored them. During their ride through Sarajevo, he and his wife were shot by Gavrilo Princip. They died June 28, 1914. Austria- Hungary was outraged by this and sent them an ultimatum. They demanded Serbia to end all anti- Austrian agitation and punish any Serbian official that was involved with the murder plot. Austria- Hungary also wanted to conduct the investigation of the Archduke’s death. Serbia agreed to everything but the investigation. This caused Austria to declare war on Serbia on July 28, 1914.

HOW DID WOMEN HELP ON THE HOME FRONT AS WELL AS WHILE AT WAR?
When men went to war, factories needed more and more people to work. Women took over their jobs. Some women even worked in war industries. They manufactured weapons and supplies.
in the Women’s Land Army went to the fields to grow their nation’s food when food shortages threatened Britain. At aid stations close to the front lines, nurses often worked around the clock. Nurses shared all the dangers of the men whose wounds they tended.

What 2 events caused the US to join WWI?
The US shared a cultural history and language with Britain and sympathized with France as another democracy, which is why they joined the Allies. Germany ceased submarine attacks in 1915 due to President Wilson (Sinking the Lusitania), but in 1917 Germany was desperate to break the stalemate. February 1, the German government announced that it would resume unrestricted submarine warfare; Wilson denounced Germany angrily. The British had also intercepted a message from Arthur Zimmerman, German foreign minister. This message was to be sent to his ambassador in Mexico. The note told the ambassador to propose to Germany “to reconquer the lost territory in New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona in return for Mexican support against the US”. April 1917 Wilson asked Congress to declare war on Germany. He stated that he reason was “to make the world safe for democracy”. He also referred to it as a war to end all wars.
